Episode Breakdown

Feature 1 (4-5 min.)

The lead topic helps viewers explore complex parenting issues, involving health care, nutrition, adoption or even family finance decisions. This segment sheds light on all sides of a topic, allowing for variations in parenting styles and beliefs.

Real parents share their thoughts on the lead topic, followed by opinions from renowned medical experts such as Joshua Sparrow, M.D., Director of Special Initiatives at the Brazelton Touchpoints Center; Jane Anderson, M.D., Chief of Pediatrics at UCSF, Mt. Zion, Dawn Duane M.D., M.P.H., Stanford University Pediatric Neurologist and Thomas Tarshis, M.D., M.P.H., Stanford University Pediatric Psychiatrist. To explore all sides, alternative health care practitioners are also consulted. Parents absorb a range of options and are encouraged to analyze their problems with respect to their own child's temperament and needs.

Feature 2 (3-4 min.)

This segment is devoted to developmental milestones. We meet parents who are trying to get their child to sleep through the night, cope with temper tantrums, toilet train and so on. This segment will chronicle the real-life experience of one family grappling with a specific issue.  The family will be given expert advice from a professional and we get to see how the situation is resolved.

Hands On, How To (3 min.)

Our warm and reassuring FIRST YEARS host Sydney Ranin consults with a wide variety of experts who provide insight and guidance on a range of topics: The newest baby products, the hottest toys, the safest gear and the coolest gifts on the market today.

Commentary (2 min.)

No parenting show would be complete without a few minutes of laughter. FIRST YEARS commentary is a moment of levity in which a guest finds the funnier side of parenting, while suggesting common-sense attitudes and tactics that can go a long way towards easing the burdens of raising your little one. Commentators include MSN Financial Columnist MP Dunleavey, comedian Jimmy Tingle,  and Josh Kornbluth, screenwriter and monologist.

The commentary rotates with Baby 101 segments, which help parents find solutions for day-to-day problems: How do you transition from baby food to adult food? How do you manage to make your child sit through his first haircut? These maybe minor issues but we’ll have easy solutions for them.

The third segment in the rotation is Daddy 101. Whether single, part-time, or married-but-overwhelmed, this segment reaches out to men trying to establish themselves in their parenting role. Possible topics address bonding with your baby, the pros and cons of father’s groups and the perplexing question of sex after the baby arrives.

Pediatrician, Professional Expert (2 min.)

In this segment we will feature medical commentary from renowned experts in all fields of pediatric medicine — behaviorist, developmental, neurological, and psychiatric. Our team of well-known professionals will weigh in on a wide variety of topics, from developmental stages, to how to help your child be happy and successful.

Parent Certified (2 min.)

Each FIRST YEARS episode concludes with the voices of real parents. In this segment, different parents describe how they dealt with problems presented earlier in the show, keeping with the FIRST YEARS philosophy to offer parents the widest possible spectrum of views on any given topic. Most important, Parent Certified reminds all parents that they can and will make the best decisions for the children they love.
